Located in Tignes France, WOM Resort is an exciting and innovative approach to establish a new luxury alpine sporting facility and wellness retreat as part the well-known ski village in the Alps. Developed by acclaimed athlete Guerlain Chicherit, WOM is a comprehensive resort including a 5‑star hotel, 17 luxury apartments and 13 bespoke chalets accompanied by world-class amenities. In harmony with the surrounding natural environment as well as the built environment, the contemporary architecture draws on the heritage vernacular of the region and incorporates progressive sustainability strategies.
As part of the bespoke chalet offering, WOM has invited 13 designers from around the globe, including Splinter Society to develop a distinct approach for each, representing the firm’s unique interior design aesthetic.
Embracing a conceptual architectural response, the Splinter Society designed chalet explores the multifaceted notion of ‘twin peaks’. This approach sets the foundations of the project as a response to the natural environment typified by jagged stone peaks. Large boulders penetrate the interiors as though they were granite outcrops from the mountainside. Natural timber, logs and rough sawn boards line the ceilings and walls.
To counteract the natural elements, the softer interior elements explore a more theatrical interpretation of the ski town setting, particularly inspired by the iconic Twin Peaks television series. Rich green features including a regal velvet curtain and glazed ceramic tile add a glamours take on a misty forest.
As the sole Australian firm involved in the project, Splinter Society also sought to link the two alpine regions, by deliberately incorporating various Australian designers in the interior scheme. Light fittings by Christopher Boots, Ross Gardam and Alex Earl build on the element of minerality while furnishings by Marc Tuckey add to the natural timber through the interior. An artwork by indigenous artist Minnie Pwerle is woven into the rug and Australian artists are displayed on the walls.
