A new three-level residence is under construction in Hawthorn, with Ferndale overseeing the build. The project features extensive use of in-situ concrete, with curving walls expressed both internally and externally.
The front façade consists of a sweeping concrete form, punctuated by a black steel portal entry and a double height glazing detail. A single window breaks the upper level. Inside, a grand staircase follows the curve of the façade, with in-situ concrete integrated throughout key interior spaces.
The curved concrete extends along the side elevations and re-emerges at the central courtyard, where two concrete fins frame black steel-framed windows. A scalloped lower roofline defines the pool pavilion, which is constructed from rough, highly textured concrete designed to catch light.
The extensive use of raw concrete is in line with the practice’s commitment to sustainability.
Construction is progressing, with the structural framework largely in place. The next phase will focus on refining internal materials and design execution.
